Local Attractions and Activities

Evansville is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. With a population of 117,429, Evansville is the state's third-largest city and the largest city in Southern Indiana. It is the commercial, medical, and cultural hub of Southwestern Indiana and the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky tri-state area.

Situated on an oxbow in the Ohio River, the city is often referred to as the "Crescent Valley" or "River City". As testament to the Ohio's grandeur, early French explorers named it La Belle Riviere ("The Beautiful River"). The area has been inhabited by various cultures for millennia, dating back at least 10,000 years. Angel Mounds was a permanent settlement of the Mississippian culture from 1000 AD to around 1400 AD. The city itself was founded in 1812.

The city has several well known educational institutions. The University of Evansville is a small private school located on the city's east side, while the University of Southern Indiana is a larger public institution located just outside the city's westside limits. Other local educational institutions have also garnered praise and attention, including nationally ranked Signature School and the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library. In 2008, Evansville was voted the best city in the country in which "to live, work, and play" by the readers of Kiplinger, and in 2009 the 11th best

Mesker Park Zoo

Situated on 45-scenic acres of rolling hills on Evansville’s northwest side, our  Zoo is home to over 700 animals from around the globe.  While visiting, you will navigate the Zoo’s geographically grouped and themed regions including South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Australia.  Throughout the Zoo, thousands of exotic and regional botanic species adorn hillsides and animal exhibits.  You will be in awe as you are transported to South America and explore the rainforest in Amazonia.

Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science

The Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science is one of Southwestern Indiana’s most established cultural institutions. This general museum maintains a permanent collection of more than 30,000 objects, including fine and decorative arts and historic, anthropological, and natural history artifacts. Over twenty temporary exhibitions are displayed every year in four changing galleries. Shows range from regional to internationally traveling exhibitions.

Bosse Field and the Evansville Otters

Home to the Evansville Otters of the Independent Frontier League, Bosse Field opened in 1915 and was the first municipally owned sports facility in the United States. Only Boston's Fenway Park (1912) and Chicago's Wrigley Field (1914) are older than Evansville's Bosse Field. It is the site for the filming of "A League of Their Own" in 1992.  Whether you're a sports fan or a history buff, this 100-year-old structure for America's favorite pastime is a must see!

Burdette Park and Aquatic Center

Burdette Park Aquatic Center offers something for everyone in the family. One of the largest Aquatic centers in the Midwest, it features a large Olympic pool with two diving boards. There is a  family pool with two breathtaking slides, and a children's pool with a floating alligator and snake closely guarded by a skilled team of guards and EMT's. There is even an exciting interactive Spray Park for smaller children and an awesome speed slide to delight the more adventurous.
